Retaining New 4-H Members -
Resources Needed!
During
discussion at the How to Grow KS 4-H gathering, it was clear that
this is an issue and that some have developed resources and
activities to address it.
Our group would like to ask that if you have a resource that you
would be willing to share
system wide, please send it electronically to either
Rod
Buchele or
Justin Wiebers so that it
can be posted to the Resource Section
of the KS 4-H page.
Also, if
you have held an activity or developed an approach to help
transition new families into 4-H,
can you share that information with the
committee, as well? Even if you
didn't have stellar results, it would be important to share the
types of approaches that are being tested out. Activity ideas can
be directed to Eric Otte (group
convener), JoEllen Arnold or
Susan Schlichting. We
will gather the info. and share it back
out to the system.
We have
so many creative and exciting things happening across the state.
It is important that we take time to share our successes and our
attempts so that we can
continue to build on ideas and work "to Make the Best
Better" as we Grow 4-H in KS!

PYD
(Positive Youth Development) Tools
(contributed by the Youth Development PFT)
Youth development
is a professional practice that is based on principles grounded in
the process of human development. What is the goal of positive youth
development?
The practice of positive youth development is more than:
Prevention – using risk and protective factor principles,
prevention focuses on what we do not want young people to become.
Prevention seeks to prevent young people from engaging in
destructive lifestyles (e.g., delinquency, violence, alcohol and
other drug use, school failure, early pregnancy).
Achievement
– using awards as an indicator, achievement focuses on things we
want youth to achieve or obtain. Graduating from high school,
getting a job, earning a scholarship or winning an office or award
are important goals, but they don’t necessarily lead to positive
relationships, community contributions or personal well-being.
Positive Youth
Development – the beliefs, behaviors, knowledge, attributes and
skills that result in a healthy and productive adolescence and
adulthood.
Promoting the full
range of developmental outcomes better prepares youth for adulthood.

BUILDING STRONG 4-H
CLUBS |
Building Strong 4-H
Clubs
We mentioned at the Strengthening 4-H Club
Trainings that resources can be used in many ways. Below is an
article for your newsletter.
Responsibilities of Parents in the 4-H Program:
- Show interest in what your children are
doing and give them encouragement.
- Provide any materials and equipment your
child may need.
- Help out the club and leader when asked.
Don't wait to be asked, VOLUNTEER!
- See that your child finishes as well as
starts their project(s). Be a "shadow helper" - guide, advise,
help - but let the child do his or her own work.
- Encourage your child when he succeeds and
even more when he fails. Encourage and reward effort and progress,
as well as the end results. Help your 4-Her be a good sport and
appreciate the success of others. Support the 4-H leaders. Let the
leaders know you appreciate them. Make 4-H a family affair, get
the whole family involved in 4-H activities.
- Learn and support the goals and objectives
of 4-H.
- Remember, the development of youth is the
mission of 4-H.
- Know that you are building for the future.
- Know that today's 4-H activities build the
citizens and leaders of tomorrow
- Know and support the Kansas 4-H Life Skills

Building Strong 4-H Clubs
The First Impression...clubs have only one chance to make a
first impression! Let’s hope it’s a positive impression because if
new members don’t feel comfortable right way with the club they
won’t come back. Therefore, let’s make of plan to be a welcoming
environment where young people and adults feel accepted.
Create a plan for welcoming new
members...this may include assigning an adult volunteer or family
to serve as the club’s New Family Coordinator.
The New Family Coordinator
arrives early to meet the members and guests at the door. They
might even have name tags available for members and a "4-H
Greet Sheet"
http://www.kansas4-h.org/Resources/Clubs/GreetSheet.doc for
the guests.
During the 4-H club meeting, the
New Family Coordinator introduces the guests and assists
them in understanding what is happening.
After the meeting, the New
Family Coordinator may follow-up with a postcard, phone call
or e-mail for thanking the guests for attending and answering
questions.
If guests become members, the
New Family Coordinator can explain and answer questions about
4-H. The New Family Coordinator can become the new member’s
life-line to the 4-H club.
Providing a welcoming environment for
new members keeps a club growing and thriving. Interested in

CAMPING |
Summer Camp is Here!!
As you prepare for 4-H camp...here are a few things to remember:
4-H Camp Web Page
As you finalize 4-H camp plans be sure to check out the great
resource on the web
http://www.kansas4-h.org/Camping/.
On the 4-H Camp page you’ll find graphics, songs, and resource links
that can provide some assistance. Thanks to the 4-H Camp Action Team
for these additional creative resources.
Camp Counselor Recognition
Farm Bureau is again sponsoring the Camp Counselor
Recognition! Each 4-H Camp Group is asked to complete the camp
counselor recognition form found at
http://www.kansas4-h.org/Camping/ under Counselor
Recognition and submit Camp Counselor’s names to the State 4-H
Office by July 15. Certificates will be available at the Kansas
State Fair.
2009 4-H Journal Camping Issue
The Camp Action Team will be putting the 2009 4-H
Journal’s Camping issue again to promote 4-H Camp and we need
assistance from county staff, district staff and camp groups. Please
send photos, story ideas, testimonial quotes or camp traditions to
Robyn Deines, Walnut Creek District,
rdeines@ksu.edu, following your 4-H Camp.
Suggestions for the 4-H Journal:
Action photos from camp. 4-H
Campers love to see themselves in the
Kansas 4-H Journal.
Quotes from campers, counselors,
agents and parents. If you get something great, please share
it...ideas..."how much fun", "how my son/daughter changed
while at camp", and "an experience that changed how I do things"!
Camp promotional flyers and
letters send to campers. Ideas for promoting camp are always
beneficial.
Other camps conducted in the
Extension Unit...day camps, junior leaders’ camp or local
specialized camps.
Please share as the Camp Action Team
is interested in promoting all camps!

CHARACTERCOUNTS! |
Respect: Listening: A Vital Dimension of Respect
The virtue of respect is demonstrated by being courteous and civil
and treating everyone in a manner that acknowledges and honors their
essential human dignity. An important but often neglected aspect
of respect is listening to what others have to say.
Respectful listening is more than hearing. It requires us to
actually consider what's being said. That's hard when we've heard it
before, aren't interested, or don't think much of the person
talking. It's even worse when we act like we're listening but are
really waiting for our turn to speak.
The fact is, most of us don't listen very well, certainly not all
the time, and especially with people closest to us. Kids are
especially adept at tuning out their parents, but parents are
equally skilled at ignoring or dismissing as foolish or irrelevant
what their kids have to say.
Disrespect is most apparent when others ignore or patronize us.
Like when they roll their eyes or betray fake interest by vacantly
staring or letting their gaze wander.
We all want to know that what we say and think matters. But if we
want others to care about what we say, we need to care about what
they say. Like all the important virtues, we teach respect best by
demonstrating it.
So listen up! It'll make people feel better, and you may even
learn something.

COUNTS! (April 29, 2008. 564.3)

IRS-TAX EXEMPT PROJECT |
|
The following is the latest news from National 4-H Headquarters
regarding the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Tax Exempt Project.
National 4-H Headquarters requested the filing deadline for groups
on the existing list that need to file their e-Postcard by May 15,
2008 be extended to 2009. The IRS granted this request, which
affects groups on the 4-H list that typically earn $25,000 or less.
This means that 4-H Clubs & Affiliated 4-H
Organizations (1) that were on your state list already submitted to
National 4-H Headquarters, (2) typically earn $25,000 or less, and
(3) have a tax year of January-December 2007 – will need to file
their first 990-N e-Postcard by May 15, 2009
rather than by May 15 of this year.
Please remember that this extension does not affect
groups that typically earn more than $25,000 (whether they are tax
exempt or not), as those groups have always needed to file a 990 or
900-EZ by the 15th day of the 5th month
following the close of their tax period.
The reason for this request is because the IRS has determined that
there are a number of issues that need to be addressed, and the IRS
needs additional time to complete the process and to list the
records needing attention.
As soon as the IRS reports they have completed the GEN 2704 updates,
National 4-H Headquarters will notify the respective states to take
care of records needing attention.
The Electronic Filing fact sheet at
http://www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/ will be updated to
reflect the May 15, 2009 filing deadline for groups that (1) are tax
exempt and (2) have a Jan-Dec tax year.
If you have a club that needs a letter which confirms that they fall
under the GEN 2704 (some donors may require this), please contact
Stephanie Niess; she will submit the required information to
National 4-H Headquarters and request such a letter. Please be aware
this may take 2-3 weeks to complete.

IMPORTANT KANSAS 4-H AWARDS PORTFOLIO UPDATE
The Kansas 4-H Records/KAA Taskforce
wishes to express its thanks to everyone who participated in the
recent series of “4-H Portfolio Premieres.” We appreciated the
help of further edits that we can make before implementation
begins in the 2008- 2009 4-H program year.
Please note that as a result of input
received during the winter, we concluded that it would be best for
Kansas 4-H that the official implementation of the KAP will be in
the October 1, 2008-September 30, 2009 4-H year. This was first
announced in The Tuesday Letter of March 11, 2008. The KAP will
be required for state project awards for the first time in 2010.
This will allow local Extension Units adequate time to train
volunteers, parents, and members in the state system.
Extension Units should continue to use
whatever local award application/record book format is in place
for the current 4-H year! Youth of 4-H ages 14-18 will be
required to submit the KAA for area screening and state judging in
2009.

State 4-H Youth Leadership Council.

Volunteer Development
April 2nd a group from Kansas attended the Iowa 4-H
Volunteer Development training with Steve McCurley, an international
volunteer development expert. We came back with many great insights
and ideas. Here are the first installment, more will be shared in
the next several Tip Sheets. From Emily M.: Having meaningful work
for your volunteers is added investment to your program. Think about
budgetary allocation process for volunteers- if you only had 10
volunteers- where would you allocate them? What are they doing in
regards to your strategic plan or POW?
From Leroy R: The need to be able to hand an information sheet to
a volunteer wanting to volunteer.
From Abbie G.: Creating a list of things that I could use
volunteers for, even simple office tasks. That way when and if
someone calls that would like to volunteer I would be able to
provide them with a way to volunteer very quickly.

Kansas 4-H and FFA Wheat Variety Plot Enrollment.
As wheat harvest approaches
it is time to remind members to re-enroll or ask new members to
enroll for the 2009 Kansas 4-H and FFA Wheat Variety Plot program.
The program begins fall of 2008 and goes through September 2009.
The enrollment form will be on the Kansas State 4-H Website,
www.kansas4-H.org by June 1 under "What's Hot" rather than the
Northwest Research Extension site. Members are asked to contact
their local Extension Office by July 10 for information with
enrollments due to the Northwest Area Extension Office by July 25,
2008. It is very important that we know the number of participants
early, so we can have enough seed and metal signs available for
Extension agents and leaders to pick up at the Kansas State Fair.
New participants will receive a large plot sign, and five individual
variety signs. These will be distributed on the first weekend of
the 2008 Kansas State Fair.
Resource information for the wheat
variety project includes: (1) Wheat Variety Plot Brochure, 4-H 565
Rev., April 2000,
http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/library/4h_y2/samplers/4H565.asp; (2)

This year's participants who are

in the Pride of Kansas Building. For more information, contact

opportunity. Youth and their adult chaperones arrive in Kansas
approximately July 20 and stay for four weeks. You don't have to
decide today, final commitments aren't due until September 2008. But
if you're curious as to what is involved, would like to shadow the
arrival orientation at Rock Springs 4-H Center, or visit a mid-term
activity near you, the summer of 2008 is the perfect chance to find
out if this is a way to strengthen your 4-H citizenship programming.
Kansas 4-H has hosted Japanese LABO and LEX Foundation students and
staff since 1977. Three adults and 34 young people in their teens
will be staying in River Valley District (Clay, Republic, Cloud and
Washington), Central Kansas District (Saline and Ottawa), Butler,
Miami, Franklin, Johnson, Morris, and Phillips-Rooks District
(Phillips and Rooks) counties this summer. If you have questions
about possibly becoming involved next year, contact Rose Scott, the
4-H Japan Inbound Exchange Coordinator at (785) 388-2009 or myself
at (785) 462-6281 or e-mail
dwaldren@ksu.edu.
