Deryl Waldren Joins NW Area Staff
Deryl Waldren joined K-State Research and Extension as a 4-H Youth Specialist in the Northwest Area Extension Office in Colby, KS, on August 31. He was an 11-year 4-H member in Greeley County, Tribune, Kansas.  Deryl began his Extension career in Logan County as the ANR Extension Agent from 1981-1984.

From Oakley, Deryl moved to Butte County, California, and served as a 4-H Agent until 1993 working for the University of California Cooperative Extension. In 1993, he transferred to Boulder County, Colorado, in Longmont and served as a 4-H, Livestock and Natural Resources Extension Agent for Colorado State University Cooperative Extension.

From 1997-1999 Deryl worked on the USDA/Army Youth Development Project based in Heidelberg, Germany working at 42 US Army installations in Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.  He helped army school-age and youth services personnel learn and apply positive youth development practices for after-school programs.

Deryl returned to Boulder County Extension in January 2000, and continued as a 4-H and Natural Resources Extension Agent.  In 2003, he set up a wildlife masters program to answer wildlife conflict questions in the Denver-metro area.  Around 20 trained volunteers helped answer wildlife conflict questions.  Deryl also worked with 290 volunteer 4-H leaders with 800 members in 45 community clubs, as well as with 4-H school-enrichment, after-school, and summer outreach day camp programming.

Deryl is excited to join K-State Research and Extension, and looks forward to working with the 26 counties in northwest Kansas, as well as working with 4-H action teams and with other Kansas 4-H programs.  To contact Deryl, call 785-462-6281, or e-mail him at:  dwaldren@ksu.edu.

Reflecting Back-Looking Forward
The first 100 years of Kansas 4-H are officially history with the closing ceremony of the Centennial celebration now over. The rain on Saturday morning didn't seem to hamper the spirits of the Candle Carriers and their families who wanted to be on hand to observe the historical moment when the candle was passed. It did mean that the ceremony was moved inside the Dillon Hall, so it was quite handy to serve the ice cream and cookies afterwards.

It was especially gratifying to me to recognize many 4-H alumni and volunteers that I have met and worked with over the past 35 years. Reading that some have committed more than 50 or 60 years of their life to 4-H was really humbling.

Perhaps what was most important, as we look to the future, was the presence of the State 4-H Youth Council, giving total leadership to organizing and conducting the ceremony. Even with the location change, everyone rallied and it came off without a hitch. Seeing the faces of first year 4-Her's receiving the candle, or reading about the accomplishments of the senior members, I know that the future is bright for the next 100 years of Kansas 4-H.

Special thanks to the Centennial Committee, who have been working on this project since 2002, the thousands who participated in the opening Parade ceremony at the kick-off, and all the 4-H members, leaders, families and communities statewide, that took part in local events and activities to celebrate this great milestone. Thanks to the Kansas 4-H Foundation and their staff who invested a great amount of time and effort in the development and production of the Centennial cookbook, which has helped to fund the statewide centennial activities, and well as renovation support for the new 4-H Centennial Hall on the Fairgrounds, and future 4-H program needs.

Thanks to the Board and staff of the Kansas State Fair for their active participation on the committee and their assistance for the opening and closing ceremonies. Special thanks to the Extension Communications staff and the Marketing committee for all the graphic design, publicity and news promotion support.

Most of all, my deepest gratitude to all those dedicated extension staff, volunteers and alumni who have gone before me to create this great Kansas legacy, and to all those youth who will carry the torch of 4-H into the next century.
Steve Fisher, Former Chair, Kansas 4-H Centennial Committee

Operation Military Kids - They need our help!
The war in Iraq and the Global War on Terrorism have changed the face of military service for those in the Army National Guard and the Army Reserves. These mobilization and deployments present unique challenges to the dependent youth of these service members. These youth still look the same to teachers, friends and the rest of the community. But their lives have been turned upside down. Many of us living in the same town or community are unaware of the stressors and challenges they face during times times of war and conflict. Some of these stressors include frequent deployments, fear of losing a parent, possible financial stress, and lack of understanding by those around them. Because of these stressors, it is important to foster resiliency or "the ability to bounce back" in these children to ensure they continue to be healthy individuals. That's where you and your community can help.

Plan now to bring some community citizens to one of these trainings to learn more about how you can be of help to military families that live in your back yard. The training starts with a free meal at 6:30 pm and training from 7:00 to 9:00
September 21 - Jackson County Fair Grounds, Holton, KS (meal reservations due Sept 18 to Nancy Nelson or Ann Domsch)
October 25 - National Guard Armory, 1506 N. Walnut, Pittsburg, KS
November 14 - Sterl Hall, Dickinson County Fairground, Abilene KS

Unveiling of 4-H VIP Orientation Resources at Annual Conference
New 4-H VIP Orientation resources will be unveiled during Annual Conference. The 4-H VIP Online Orientation will be unveiled during sessions on Wednesday, September 27 at 1:30 p.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. If you didn't sign up for either session, stop by the VIP display during the Resource Fair to view the online course.

Each local Extension Office will receive a 4-H VIP Orientation CD. Agents need to PICK UP their copy at the VIP display at the Resource Fair or during the "Unveiling the Online 4-H VIP Orientation" sessions. Local units may purchase additional copies of the CD during Annual Conference for $5. You may take the additional CDs home with you and an invoice will be mailed to your local office.

Offering the 4-H VIP Orientation at a face to face session is still the best option. We created a revised PowerPoint and lesson plan that match the one on the CD. They will be available on the web at http://www.Kansas4-H.org/Volunteer/VIP/ on September 27.Remember that all 4-H VIP resources are available on the web to help you as this new 4-H year begins. Note too that a Board Leadership Module on the Volunteer Information Profile is now on the Board Leadership website. The module is designed for agents to use to help their board understand the procedure for screening and orienting volunteers. To get to the module go to www.oznet.ksu.edu/board leadership. Click on Board Leadership Modules in the lower center of the page, then VIP.

If you have any questions regarding the resources please contact Diane Mack at dmack@ksu.edu  or Rod Buchele at rbuchele@ksu.edu

CHARACTER COUNTS! 4-H Animal Projects. One purpose of the 4-H animal projects is to teach young people how to feed, fit and show their animals. The more important purpose is to provide an opportunity for personal growth and development of the youth person. The Six Pillars of CHARACTER COUNTS! help better describe the value of the 4-H livestock projects. CHARACTER COUNTS! presents the idea that people develop and strengthen character by practicing certain behaviors, just as muscles are built through exercise. Therefore, the purpose of the 4-H livestock program is to provide opportunities for young people to develop character. The character traits identified and some practices that may build character follow.

1. Trustworthiness: includes honesty, promise keeping and loyalty.

  • feeds and waters the animals daily (promise keeping)
  • adheres to possession deadlines (honesty)
  • adheres to withdrawal time on drugs and de-wormers
  • uses only approved drugs
  • 2. Respect: includes courtesy and proper treatment of people and things.

  • handles and treats animals humanely
  • cares for animals properly
  • listens to and follows advise of advisors
  • recognizes that animal project is dependent on 4-H’er and provides daily feed and water
  • 3. Responsibility: includes the pursuit of excellence, accountability and perseverance.

  • feeds and waters the animal daily (even on the busy, difficult days)
  • goes beyond providing the daily needs of the animal in giving additional time and attention to produce a winner
  • adheres to deadlines for entry form and for arrival for livestock shows
  • never gives up in the show ring (perseverance)
  • 4. Fairness: involves consistently applying rules and standards appropriate for different age groups and ability levels.

  • Feeds only approved livestock rations
  • uses only approved drugs
  • accepts winning and losing with grace
  • follows recommended procedure in the show ring
  • follows recommended procedures for fitting and grooming an animal
  • 5. Caring: promoting the well-being of people and things in a young person’s world. It denotes action and not just feeling.

  • feeds and waters animal daily
  • provides clean barn/stall for animal
  • treats animal humanely at all times
  • 6. Citizenship: includes making the home, community and country a better place to live for themselves and others..

  • accepting instruction
  • winning and losing with grace
  • helping others at stock shows
  • teaching young members
  • treating animals humanely
  • ensuring that meat is safe for consumption

It’s once again time to review and recognize the work of all of 4-H Club Reporters from across the state. Each Extension Unit may submit one reporter’s book equal to the number of counties making up the unit. Reporter Books should reflect the news that represents the work of the young person. The book may include print news articles and photos, club newsletters, press releases, radio scripts and TV scripts. Photos and articles written and produced by representatives of local media outlets should not be included. Reporters books should be delivered or mailed to the State 4-H Office to arrive no later than Wednesday, November 1. Recognition is provided by the Kansas 4-H Foundation to the most outstanding efforts.

    4-H Curriculum Q & A:
Each month we will use this space to answer your questions about 4-H Curriculum, so send your questions to jadams@ksu.edu  and we will share the answers with the entire system.

    Q. Where do I find a current list of 4-H project materials?
A: The best reference for 4-H project curriculum is the Project Selection Guide in the August Issue of the Kansas 4-H Journal. This piece is updated each year. The Kansas 4-H CD contains more publications, but is not updated as often. It is available for $5 from the State 4-H Office.

    Q. What 4-H record sheets do I use?
A: Most projects have a Member Guide and Annual Report available; however, many counties are using the new P1106 Generic Record sheet.

    Q. What do project leaders use?
A: We recommend project leaders use the Kansas 4-H Leader Notebooks or the National CCS Helper Guides.

    Q. What is CCS?
A: This is the national juried 4-H curriculum from the "Cooperative Curriculum System".

    Q. Who pays for the materials?
A: This is a county option; however, many counties are asking the leaders and/or youth to purchase the materials via local project enrollment fairs. Some clubs will purchase leader materials. Some leaders are willing to buy them for personal references.

Send me your questions for next month.

    4-H Camp Theme Contest
Once again the camp theme committee is seeking the help of 4-Hers to determine the theme of camp for the 2007 camping season. We need your help to make 4-Hers aware of this opportunity. Here are the guidelines for the contest. Come up with an original theme for 4-H camp.

Remember this is more than a design, but a theme to set the stage for everything that goes on at camp. Submit your theme idea with the entry form and an attached sheet telling in 50 words or less why you chose this theme. Submit your entry by Friday, October 13, 2006 to the Marshall County Extension Office, 1201 Broadway, Courthouse, Marysville, KS 66508. The 4-H Camper whose theme is chosen will receive a camp scholarship courtesy of the Kansas 4-H Foundation. The winner must pay own transportation fees. Last year we had an excellent response to our call for ideas, so we appreciate your assistance in making 4-Hers aware of this opportunity. Please check the 4-H website for a poster to promote this contest. If you have any questions please call Susie Latta at the Marshall County Extension Office.

    National 4-H Conference
Information is now available on the state 4-H website and applications completed by members and letters of reference will be due in the State 4-H Office no later than 5:00pm, Monday, October 2, 2006. The 2007 National 4-H Conference will be Saturday, March 24 through Thursday, March 29, 2007 at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The National 4-H Conference is a working conference in which youth and adults-at the invitation of the Secretary of Agriculture-assist in the development of recommendations to help guide 4-H Youth Development Programs nationally and in their communities.  This event brings together youth, volunteer leaders, and state and county Extension staff members from across the United States, the U.S. Territories, and the Canadian Provinces.

NEW for 2007; Kansas 4-H members who have attended National 4-H Congress WILL be eligible to apply for National 4-H Conference.  Previously, a member could not attend both events.

Also NEW for 2007; the maximum number of Kansas delegates has been increased to six (from four in previous years).   This means more opportunities for our young people and greater chances for applicants to be selected. One adult chaperone will also be selected to accompany the delegation.  Interested adults should contact Justin Wiebers for details.

Each Extension unit is invited to nominate one teen per county for this opportunity. Delegates must be 15 to 18 years old by January 1, 2007.

A panel will screen the written applications. Top applicants will be invited to Rock Springs for interviews to select final delegates. Final selection of delegates will be made on the basis of the written application and interviews.  All interviews will be held Saturday, November 18, 2006 during the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum.  Nominees are not required to register for the Kansas Youth Leadership forum to interview.  Interviewees who are attending the Forum will be excused for interviews.

The delegate’s share of registration and transportation costs is $900.00. 4-H clubs, 4-H councils, local 4-H Foundations and local service groups have helped many delegates with this fee. Additional conference fees are sponsored by the Kansas Bankers Association.

National 4-H Conference delegates will be involved in the 4-H program through the State 4-H Youth Council, State 4-H Advisory and several other aspects of the Kansas 4-H program.

    4-H International Exchanges for 2007
It is not too early to begin thinking about participation as a host Extension Unit for the Japanese Exchange.  We are requesting an Intent to Participate as host for the Japanese Exchange from Counties or Districts.  Based on your response, Kansas will be committing to host a specific number of youth and adult chaperones for  the 2007 summer inbound program.  The Japanese will arrive in counties about July 23 and stay with one family each for around 3 ½ weeks. To participate, a county or unit will agree to locate a volunteer coordinator who will manage the recruitment and screening of six host families, plan orientation and organize local activities during their stay.  Training, resource materials and some expense money are available for the coordinators and agents.  Extension agents oversee the program and may be as active as they wish in its conduct.  Watch for details and the Intent to Participate form.

Kansas 4-H’ers will have the opportunity to travel to several countries through 4-H in 2007 with chaperoned groups organized by WorldWise Exchange Services, the organization participating states contract with through the 4-H International Programs Committee, or a partner state.  The destinations include Japan, Mexico, Australia and Finland  and perhaps other countries. We expect to have updated information on the available countries on the 4-H web site http://www.Kansas4-H.org/worldcitizenship around September 1 where interested 4-H’ers can also find the application.  4-H alumni over 18 may also apply for individual Kansas 4-H exchange opportunities tailored to their experience and interests in partner counties.  Applications for all exchanges will be requested by November 6.
