Discovery Days. It's time to get Discovery Days registrations "IN"! Extension Offices need to have all youth, volunteers and agents registered on-line by noon on Thursday, April 20. At that point, on-line registration will be closed. Late registrations will not be accepted.

Invoices, including registration, class, parking and other fees, will be mailed to Extension Offices on Friday, April 21. Invoices should be reviewed for accuracy. Each Extension Office should then send one check payable to "Kansas 4-H Foundation", by Monday, May 15. This mailing must include a copy of the invoice plus copies of completed Kansas 4-H  Participation Forms for every youth, volunteer and agent attending Discovery Days. Please take time to review Participation Forms before sending them to assure that they are complete and signed. Feel free to highlight any issues that might be important.

Rooming will be automatically assigned within counties or districts based on gender, age and designated chaperones. Agents who wish to submit housing assignments should e-mail them to jwiebers@ksu.edu by 5:00 p.m. April 20.

Any delegate cancellations must be reported to the State 4-H Office before 5:00 p.m. Monday, May 1 to be eligible for substitution or waiver of fees. Substitutes must be same gender and must accept the same classes as the person they are replacing. After May 1, no substitutions are allowed and all fees must be paid.

The Discovery Days Media Team will be creating a multimedia CD with photos, video and files from the conference. The CD will be available for $5.00 for participants to order while they are at Discovery Days. Checks should be made payable to "Kansas 4-H Foundation". CDs will be mailed to individuals after Discovery Days.

Media Team selections will be made on April 20 and announced shortly thereafter. If you have delegates who plan to apply, they need to get their applications (available on the Discovery Days web page) to William Biles and Nathan Harms before April 20 to be considered. Media Team members will be withdrawn from their classes so they can fulfill their duties.

As in previous years, some classes at Discovery Days may not meet the minimum number of participants required by instructors. Participants affected by these class cancellations will be contacted about alternate class selections. A limited number of spaces have been reserved in most classes to allow for these transfers.

There will be a pizza party paid for by the Discovery Days Action Team for the delegation with the largest percentage increase of youth participants!!!

If you have any questions about your Discovery Days registration, please contact Mary Gehrt, Cheryl Thomas or Justin Wiebers in the State 4-H Office.    Wiebers

Operation Military Kids - Ready, Set, Go Training. I hope you have pulled your county team together and are ready to go to one of the trainings in May.  Your team does not have to be a new group, it can be a group you are already working with.  The team just needs to be a group of people who have  a  passion for kids.  If you haven't gotten your team together yet and you want to learn more come on down.

The war on Terrorism is not over and probably won't be for some time, so we will be having deployments from Kansas with the National Guard and Army Reserves.  Most of you will find you have some of these folks in your community.  If you already have a support system in your county, congratulations.  For many counties this is not the case. I hope to see you at one of the trainings.

National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference. Science Engineering Technology (SET) for the 21st Century - the 2006 National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference will be held July 24-27 at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. The cost is $300 and includes meals, lodging and program expenses. Kansas has been invited to send a state team. Please help us promote this great opportunity for youth and adults.

This has been an outstanding conference in the past and looks to be outstanding again this year. The web link for more information is: http://4hntc.4-h.org/ . If you would like me to e-mail you the brochure, please message me directly and I will be happy to send it to you.

The focus of SET is for the whole 4-H program, not just computer and technology area. Focus sessions include: Biotechnology, Animal Science, Architecture, Computer Science, Engineering, Fine and Performing Arts, Food Science, Forensics (think CSI), Geography, Community Service, Nutrition and Textiles. The focus areas will explore (and use) technology in their area.

Each state may send one team. Because this is a youth conference with adult partners, the state delegation must be at least 51% youth. At this time there is no limit on the number of delegates, though all must be part of the state team. Registrations to be part of the Kansas team need to be sent to the Southwest Area Office, 4500 E. Mary St., Garden City, KS  67846, Attention: SET. Registrations are due May 10. Check out the website and give this some thought. If you have questions, please contact me.      BUCHELE

Centennial Service Project.  Has your county or district participated in the Kansas 4-H Centennial Service Project? Community food pantries will continue to have needs in these upcoming spring and summer months. Spring is the time when many think about gardening. Please encourage your 4-H families or clubs to consider planting a row for the hungry to donate to a local food bank or pantry.

If your clubs or groups are collecting, working at a soup kitchen, or planting food for the hungry, make sure they report what they are doing.                  HINSHAW and NEIER

CampferenceYouth, ages 12-14, will want to be a part of the first ever Kansas 4-H Campference, June 24-27, 2006 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. This event will combine the fun of 4-H Camp and 4-H Conferences for this middle school audience.

We are also recruiting chaperones/adult helpers for the event. These folks need to be 21 years or older and VIP registered. If agents or adult volunteers are interested, contact Beth Hinshaw bhinshaw@ksu.edu

This event is offered by the Kansas 4-H Youth Council.   HINSHAW and the Campference Committee

Glory Be Animal Sales.  You have no doubt received a flier in your office about the new 2006 Sitter Critters - Glory Be animals. The Youth Council will be selling them as a fundraiser again this year, but it will be different. We would like counties/districts or others to make a preorder; those ordered by May 15 can be picked up at Discovery Days. If there seem to be additional requests we may make a fall order, but right now the May order is what we are planning on, and most likely they will not be sold at State Fair.

For those counties, districts or 4-H Clubs that would like to use some of them this summer for event prizes or awards, order them now. There is an order form available on the web. Your help sharing this with 4-H families will be appreciated.

We expect Doobie the Chicken, River Dog, Dutchess the Lamb, Mr. Boer the Goat, Henry the Bear, Shoofly the Pig, Seymour the Rabbit, Millie the Holstein Cow, Smudge the Cat and Buckwheat the Horse to all be available. If you did not get the fliers and would like to look at the animals, you may do so by going to this web page: www.glorybe.com

The Youth Council still has flip flops, hats, denim aprons and denim tote bags.

Thanks for your support of this Youth Council Project.         HINSHAW and CASH

CHARACTER COUNTS! Pillar Three - Responsibility. Life is full of choices... Responsibility is an important part of good character concerned with the moral obligation to choose attitudes, words and actions, and the duty to accept personal responsibility for the consequences of those actions. Responsibility requires a person to recognize that what they do - and what they don’t do - matters. You can’t choose whether you are good looking, smart or athletic. You can’t choose your parents or the circumstances in which you grow up. But all of us choose how to deal with the difficulties and opportunities of life. From these choices, our character is formed.

Twelve Major Concepts of Responsibility

1. Be Accountable 7. Pursue Excellence
2. Exercise Self-Control 8. Be Proactive
3. Plan and Set Goals 9. Be Persistent
4. Choose Positive Attitudes 10. Be Reflective
5. Do Your Duty 11. Set a Good Example
6. Be Self-Reliant 12. Be Morally Autonomous

“Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.” - William Jennings Bryan (Feb. 22, 1899 speech)    GERHARD ggerhard@ksu.edu

KSF Ag. Challenge of Champions and Photo Judging Contest. I believe you have recently received a letter from Debbie Anderson announcing a change in the starting time of the Ag. Challenge of Champions. In the past, the Photo Judging Contest and Ag. Challenge of Champions have used the same room, the Challenge following the Judging Contest. With the change in time for the Challenge event, the Photo Judging Contest location will move to the other side of the Encampment Building. The Photo Fun Day and Photo Judging Contest will both be in Dillion Hall on Sept. 10, 2006. The Photo Action Team believes this will work and will try it at the request of State Fair. If you have any questions, please contact me.     BUCHELE

National Camping Listserve. There is a new National Camping ListServe being maintained at the National 4-H Headquarters. The 4-H Camping ListServe (4hcamping@lyris.csrees.usda.gov) is intended to increase the communication in one of our most important delivery methods. Our hope is that camp staff across the 4-H world will be able to share ideas, programs and resources, as well as seek assistance in areas that other camp programs may have experienced.

In order to subscribe, individuals should send an email to ementzer@csrees.usda.gov with the subject line "Camping ListServe", their name, email address, and state affiliation.  HINSHAW

Speak up and take the National 4-H Technology Survey!  National 4-H Council and National 4-H Headquarters want to know what you think about technology and how to use technology in 4-H. Your ideas and opinions will help the national leadership of 4-H to improve the technology resources that they provide to the 4-H community. It's your chance to speak up and tell National 4-H Headquarters and National 4-H Council what you're looking for.

The survey is open to 4-H members of all ages, including youth, volunteers, and staff! The results will help National 4-H Council and Headquarters to make critical decisions about their future use of technology to enhance the 4-H experience.

National Extension Volunteerism Conference. Rock Springs 4-H Center will host the 2007 National Extension Volunteerism Conference April 16-19, 2007. It is going to be a great conference and will be open to all folks interested in Volunteerism. We would like to have a large group of Kansas Agents attend this conference. Please mark April 16-19, 2007 on your calendar now so the dates will be saved and plan to attend. This is an outstanding professional development experience and I strongly urge you to save the dates and attend. It will never be closer.   BUCHELE
Kansas City Global Conference Planning Committee Members needed. Kansas is looking for two Agents to serve on the planning committee for 2007 and 2008. The time commitment involves two one-day planning meetings per year, plus arriving one day early for the conference to help plan and conduct the conference. The remaining business is usually conducted by e-mail and two to three conference calls.

Interested Agents should contact Justin Wiebers and discuss the time commitment with their County or District Director, Board and Area Director. Selections will be made by June 15.       WIEBERS

Master Volunteers. The Kansas Association of 4-H Volunteers and the 4-H Youth Development Department will be sponsoring the Kansas 4-H Master Volunteer program again this year. The training will be Nov. 17-18, 2006 at Manhattan and Rock Springs 4-H Center. While this seems a long way into the future (and it is), now is the time to begin working locally on this opportunity.

Master Volunteers can help us get more done within the time available. Trained Master Volunteers make great contributions to their local programs. A brochure with information about the program and the training will be on the web at Kansas4H.org in a few days at: ../Volunteer/06MasterVolunteerTrainingBrochure.pdf

Please check it out and start thinking who you would like to work with as a Master 4-H Volunteer. More information for agents will be available soon. BUCHELE, rbuchele@ksu.edu  /VAN HORN pvanhorn@ksu.edu
