Farewell to Walter Barker We bid a fond farewell
to Walter as he begins a new chapter in his book of life, as he as accepted a
4-H Youth Development Position in Nevada. We all know Walter as a very special
unique humanoid, a youth development professional who strongly values youth
leadership. His legacy will be the creation of the SpaceTech program.
Walter will also be remembered for bringing the term "creative cheating" to
life in a variety of settings! Walter, we wish for you and your family only
the best that life has to offer. Please come back to Kansas for a visit now
and then. McNally |

Farewell to Kathy Zimmerman It is with mixed
feelings that we announce Kathy Zimmerman has accepted a position in the
Department of Communications, with her last day in our office being January
27th. We wish her well in this new chapter in her book of life. Kathy has been
an instrumental partner as we have implemented technological changes in the
way in which our department manages events and activities and it will be a
challenge to fill her shoes. Please know that our department will strive to
provide the service you expect and we are hopeful that you will be patient and
understanding during this time of transition. Again, our congratulations and
best wishes to Kathy! McNally |

Wichita Garden Show 4-H Photography Extravaganza The annual 4_H
Photography Extravaganza will be March 3rd and 4th at the Wichita Garden Show.
Brochures for each Extension Unit were in State Fair sacks picked up at the
end of State Fair. More brochures are available from the Garden Show Office,
316_946_0883, or email:
wichitagardenshow@sbcglobal.net. More
information is also available at
Kansas 4-H.
A great slate of activities are planned for participants including; youth
photography workshops, the chance to meet with a photography judge to have two
photos critiqued, the Photography Judging Contest, adult workshops (including
a mini judging contest) and the very special opportunity to take photos of the
Garden Show exhibits after all others have left the show late the evening of
March 4th. Participants can then enter their four best photos in the Garden
Show photography contest. This would make a wonderful field trip for a project
group. Invite your club’s Horticulture project members to join this field
trip.
A special feature of the Extravaganza this year will be the opportunity for
members to meet with a state fair qualified judge to get feedback on the
photo(s) they sent to state fair last year. Members should bring the actual
photo they exhibited at state fair if they wish feed back.
Save the date, let everyone know (they don't have to be enrolled in the
photography project to participate) and plan to be there March 4 and 5. If you
can’t make it both days, come for just the Friday evening activities or just
the Saturday morning . All 4_Hers who pre-register before Feb. 10 will receive
a ticket for free admission to the Garden Show. There will be one adult ticket
for every 4 project members.

Kansas State Fair Class
Changes Changes for the 4-H
Division at the Kansas State Fair will be posted on the State 4-H web site
Friday, January 20. All edits will be marked in red.
As noted last year the
“Aerospace” division will be “SpaceTech” beginning in 2006 with classes for
Astronomy, Robotics, and Rocketry. The SpaceTech sections have been
completely re-written, so please review carefully for changes that may affect
your programs.
There had also been
discussion about creating a Communications division to incorporate classes for
Demonstrations, Public Service Announcements, Web Site Design and Multimedia
Design, but based on recommendations of the State 4-H Advisory Committee,
these classes will NOT be available for the 2006 fair. A task force will
review options and make recommendations for the 2007 State Fair. Task Force
members are Amy Taylor, Cindy Williams, Kay Voorhees, John Stannard, Whitney
Madden, and Chair Justin Wiebers.
Although Public Service
Announcements will not be a class at the State Fair this year, we will still
want PSAs to play over the building’s sound system throughout the fair.
Please be thinking of how your 4-H members and volunteers might be able to
participate in this opportunity. These 30 second recordings will need to be
submitted to the state 4-H Office electronically as .MP3, .WMA or .WAV files
no later than August 15. Additional details will be available with the State
Fair Packet when it is posted at the end of June.
Please also remember as
you are updating your county fair books, to check the fair information
contained in the 4-H section of the Administrative Handbook to make sure that
local fair guidelines are in compliance with K-State Research and Extension
policies. Wiebers |

CHARACTER COUNTS!-What is Character? Character is revealed by how
you behave when you think no one is looking. Character is what is inside us
that responds to life. Our responses come from the things we have learned and
the habits we’ve developed. Everyone has a character, but not everyone has
good character. When we refer to somebody’s character, we think of the moral
choices he makes, and the virtues he practices. A person has good character
because she knows the difference between right and wrong, and tries to do what
is right for the right reasons. Character affects every area of behavior and
it affects every relationship. Our true character is shown every day by our
normal attitudes and behavior as well as how we treat people who cannot help
us or hurt us. It may not be fair, but people will judge us based on our last
worst act, even when that act is "out of character" for us. Character is not
inherited nor is it forever determined by our environment. We have to learn
character. Where does good character come from? First, good character
comes from practicing personal discipline in our choices. We might ask
ourselves: "Are our choices rational or emotion driven?" "Have we considered
the possible consequences?" "Have we considered our long-term goals?"
Secondly, good character comes from being careful with our thoughts and
cultivating good ideals and values. Thirdly, good character comes from
courage. It takes courage to change simply because we don’t know what will
happen. When we change, it takes courage to face possible opposition from
friends, family members or co-workers. Fourthly, determination is necessary to
develop good character. We have to overcome mistakes. We have to overcome the
pull of old habits. We have to overcome the opposition of friends, families
and co-workers.
When we refer to "building character," we are concerned with instilling
within a person the positive, admirable and ethical traits of good character.
First, character training must involve teaching a person to follow the rules
of good behavior. Those whom we are training have to know what is expected of
them. Secondly, character training must involve developing good habits, which
come only through repeated practice. Thirdly, character training must provide
positive examples by placing children in the company of responsible adults and
older youth.
"Of all the properties which belong to honorable men, not one is so highly
prized as that of character" ---- Henry Clay

Out-of-State 4-H Competitions The consensus
reached by a special task force to the State 4-H Advisory and is now the
current policy is that county/district teams are preferred as they offer a
richer experience for the youth in preparing for the trip through local
fundraising and workouts which enhances the youth development aspect of the
experience. However, some contests may need to modify the selection process to
encourage more participation in smaller contests or to enable the state to
actually field a team for national competition.
Modifications or changes in team selections by a state contest
should be publicized well in advance of the state contest. Adams

Bridges Out of Poverty Working and
understanding different social groups in our communities can be challenging.
Several Kansas Extension Agents have attended Bridges Out of Poverty
and found it very helpful as they work with diverse audiences. A training will
be held Tuesday and Wednesday, April 11 & 12, 2006, at the Sedgwick County
Extension Education Center in Wichita to assist Extension staff in acquiring
skills to working with low-income audiences. The workshop will look at social
economic groups, causes of poverty, and differences in family structure. The
focus will then shift to resources needed to build a stable life and improve
relationships and outcomes with individuals, organizations and community.
Terie Dreussi Smith from Ohio will be with us the first
day. She is the co-author of Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for
Professionals and Communities. Terie is a former school teacher and has
been a faculty member of several colleges. She has also served as a social
program manager for youth-based service agencies and community coalitions.
On the second day, DeAnne Herrsche from the South Central
Kansas Education Service Center will work with staff to process the research
in regards to being useful in the planning and delivery of programs. DeAnne
has helped several groups apply this information to make a difference in
professionals and with those whom they serve.
Be sure to get these dates on your calendar. Registration
will be $50; more details will be out in February. Fink |
