4-H Tip Sheet Changes
We are looking for ways to improve our delivery format of 4-H news and information and would like your suggestions.  We understand the monthly Tip Sheet has not been available soon enough for the publishing schedules of some of your local 4-H newsletters. Below are two options we are considering to deliver information in a more timely manner:

  • Utilizing the Tuesday Letter as our primary means of keeping you up to date on 4-H news and information with appropriate links to detailed information.

  • Using the Counties Listserv for other pertinent information as necessary.

If you have any thoughts or preferences on how you receive 4-H news and information, please e-mail Karen Knox at ksknox@ksu.edu by December 1.  Your input will help us in our goal of providing timely and effective delivery of information to you.

Kansas 4-H Cookbook Sales  Kansas 4-H Clubs are doing an outstanding job of selling the new 4-H cookbooks --- Essence of Kansas Taste Three. Nearly 70% of the books are sold so if you need additional books in your office for the holiday season or if you have clubs that want to be a part of the Centennial Time Capsule, the time to order those books is now!

About a month ago, you received additional information from the Foundation on the Centennial Time Capsule and a Q&A letter about the cookbook. If you need additional information or have any questions, please call the 4-H Foundation at 785-532-5881. Many thanks for your support of a major fundraising effort for 4-H clubs and the Kansas 4-H Youth Development Program. McNally

Accident & Medical Insurance for 4-H Members and Programs  Now that the new 4-H year has begun, it is time to review the status of providing accident and medical insurance coverage for 4-H members, program participants, and volunteers in your local 4-H programs. One option is to purchase a one year policy at the cost of only $1.00 per person. Another option is to purchase a policy for each respective event or activity. Please review the American Income Life Insurance Co. website for additional information regarding the benefits and costs of the various plans. McNally

County Club Days Judging  Collegiate 4-H will be available to judge County Club Days this spring for interested counties. Please contact Heather Baumberger, County Club Days Coordinator, at heatherb@ksu.edu for arrangements. Please remember that the Collegiate 4-H Club will be attending National Conference February 23-26, 2006, and might be limited to the number of judges available that weekend.  Baumberger

Resource Discussion Guide for Proposed Rule/Regulation  In a recent search on the web, I found a great resource on the Iowa State 4-H website that I would like to share with you. It is a discussion guide for proposed rules/regulations, including key questions to ask in developing a rule as well as a worksheet focusing on key elements for use in that process. Copies of this document will be distributed at the upcoming Area 4-H Updates.

Because I receive many calls throughout the year regarding "rules" that clubs, councils, committees or any group of individuals want to make for the local 4-H program, I believe that this resource tool will be invaluable for many of you to share with the respective entities. More than anything else, they are involved in the process of reviewing the proposed rules.

The key type of questions to ask in developing a rule include:
1) Does the rule help youth grow? Does it encourage continued learning? Does it establish a positive educational setting?

2) Is the rule appropriate for intended youth? Were youth involved in the development of the rule? Should the rule have different expectations for younger youth and older youth?

3) Is the rule enforceable? Are you willing to enforce it?

If the answers are "yes",  the group then responds to additional questions focusing on the key elements.  If the answers are "no",  the rule should not be instituted.  More information will be distributed at 4-H Updates.  McNally

Kansas 4-H Policies and Guidelines  Has it been awhile since you've read the Kansas 4-H Policies and Guidelines? Don't know where your copy is? Don't know where to find it on the web? It's real easy!! You can download and print the current version, click on Agents, click on Agent Intranet. The document and accompanying appendix support materials can be located in the lower right hand corner of the page.

The current version of the Kansas 4-H Policies and Guidelines is undergoing an indepth review for the purpose of creating a more user friendly and concise document. This is a very labor intensive process, with leadership being given by Beth Hinshaw, Diane Mack, Walter Barker, and Justin Wiebers. If you have an interest in being involved in this task, please contact either Pat McNally or Beth Hinshaw.  McNally

4-H Member Requirements Task Force  A task force has been formed to address the issue of "Should there be requirements for 4-H club members and, if so, what should those requirements consist of?" Members of the task force include Dana Belshe, Crystal Coffman, Eric Otte, Sarah Maas, Amy Gerdes and Peggy Boyd. In the near future, you will have the opportunity to respond to a survey they have developed to gather information regarding this topic. The same survey will also be used to gather information from 4-H members and volunteers attending the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum and the Volunteer Forum. Please share your suggestions with any of the members on the Task Force. Their first meeting takes place December 20, 2005.  McNally

Today 4-H comes in many forms and sizes, but the club model still remains our flagship program. Plan to join us, as we spend time focusing on Strengthening 4-H Clubs. The purpose of this training is to strengthen our capacity to work with adults and youth to develop and support strong, effective 4-H Clubs. Topics will include the latest research on characteristics of successful (strong) 4-H clubs; creating a positive environment; making club meetings that youth choose to attend and sharing program management tools for club organization and operation.

You’ll go home with new resources and ideas to share with your club leaders. Registration fee is $20 which includes a resource notebook and lunch. Agenda and online registration are available.  Mack/Buchele/Hinshaw/Barker
