Horse Levels Testing Results now posted on the Web!
Thanks to the programming expertise of Kinnera Reddy Angadi, a Graduate Research Assistant with the Department of Communications, the 4-H Horse Levels Testing Results are now posted on the 4-H Intranet.  This project is just in the initial stages, but hopefully is fully functional.  Extension personnel have access to view results from all counties and districts, so please use discretion in sharing these results.

Later phases of this project being discussed and planned include an on-line testing component and the ability to print completion certificates at the local level.  If you have questions or comments, please contact us in the State 4-H Office. Adams/Wiebers

Kansas State Fair 4-H Volunteers Needed  We need your help! The assistance provided by Extension staff, teen and adult volunteers is absolutely vital to the 4-H Division at the State Fair!

Last year, volunteers and staff helped process and display over 9,000 exhibits!  This year with a newly remodeled exhibit building, new locations for exhibit areas, new display equipment, new processes for unloading, and new contests, it's going to be even more important to have lots of people helping!

We truly appreciate your assistance in recruiting and entering teen and adult volunteers, (and yourself) in the KSFAIR entry system by August 15.

In order for you and your potential volunteers to know where help is needed, a list of exhibit areas and the number of individuals needed is available with the State Fair Packet on the 4-H website.

A sign up form is available to collect information about volunteers, but the information needs to be entered in the KSFAIR Entry System under class #1234 no later than August 15. Additional entries should be made for each exhibit area or responsibility a volunteer is willing to assist with. This data will be used to provide an admission ticket for each day a teen, adult or Extension staff volunteer works. The Kansas State Fair will provide a meal ticket for volunteers who work at least four hours and are not receiving reimbursement from other sources. Parking in the public lots will be free again this year and hangtags are not needed to park there.

If you have questions about helping with a specific exhibit area, please contact the 4-H specialist or chair. If you need assistance with the registration/entry process, please contact Cheryl Thomas cthomas@ksu.edu  Wiebers

One last call for Kansas Youth Leadership Forum Workshop Presenters.  We need a few more workshops, so if you were planning to submit and just did not get it done, there is a small window of time to put something together.

All workshops will be on Saturday, November 19 at Rock Springs 4-H Center.  Topics should center on leadership. Some ideas might include, but are not limited to community service, citizenship, communication, conflict management, ethics, motivation, decision making, leading by example, time management, international citizenship, multi cultural studies, diversity, business etiquette and getting involved after high school. The Kansas State 4-H Youth Council members hope that you (or one of your volunteers) will be interested in sharing your expertise or talent with this opportunity.

You will find the letter and proposal form on the KYLF web page.

We need any more proposals by Wednesday July 27.  You may fax the form or send as an email attachment to kzimmerm@oznet.ksu.edu

Bridging the G.A.P. (Generations and Power)

  • I listen carefully to youth/adults

  • I expect youth to make their own decisions

  • I seek to learn from youth/adults

  • I am willing to share my power with youth/adults

If you were to rank the validity of the above statements, could you score a ten? If not, the Kansas 4-H Youth Council has a workshop to help you!

4-H members, volunteers, staff, and community members are invited to attend Bridging the G.A.P. (Generations and Power). This workshop will take place across the state to influence adults and youth to work in better partnerships with one another. Interactive workshops will be held based on the Youth and Adult Partnerships Curriculum developed by the National 4-H Youth Directions Council. Workshop participants will be taught through comparing experiences, brainstorming ideas, and learning new ways of thinking that in many instances a problem exists due to an age barrier but positive outcomes can come about through working in equal partnerships.

The workshops will show participants the magnitude at which problems exist and how to correct them. All participants will receive the knowledge and materials necessary to improve the relationship between youth and adults in their communities.

Workshop Dates and Locations.

Wichita -August 3rd (registration deadline July 27th)
Emporia -August 13th (registration deadline August 5th)

Kansas 4-H Centennial Corner  Opening Centennial Ceremony Invitation and Details--As was noted in the July Tip Sheet Centennial Update, please be sure that all your 4-H  members, families, leaders, alumni and staff are invited to participate in the Opening Ceremony by marching in the 4-H Parade.

You can use the following copy for your next newsletter.

"Please join us by kicking off the 4-H Centennial opening ceremony by marching in the 4-H Parade. Come wearing your 4-H logo clothing, and meet at Gottschalk Park at 9:30 am, Saturday, Sept. 10, just inside the main gate of the State Fairgrounds, 20th and Poplar. Volunteers will be there to help line you up and give instructions. The 105 Centennial Candle bearers will lead off the parade at 10am. You will follow as we march down the black top road, headed for the new 4-H Centennial Hall, chanting, "Head-Heart-Hands-Health-Forever 4-H (clap, clap). This will be repeated as we march down the road.

The Fair will provide security at the crossroads we march. Once we get to the southeast entrance of the 4-H Centennial Hall, the candle bearers will have a reserved place to stand during the building dedication and Centennial ceremony. Other marchers are free to remain and listen and watch the official ribbon cutting and opening. The ceremony will close with a roll call of each county, and their candle will be taken into the building and placed around the giant birthday cake. We will then all sing "Happy Birthday" to 4-H and a commemorative pin with the Power Cat and 4-H Clover will be handed out to all participants."

Centennial Candle Form  A letter addressed to "Extension Agent Responsible for 4-H Centennial" was sent hard copy in the bulk mail in mid -July to each county office. If you have not seen it, be sure to ask around your office, or request another copy from the State 4-H Office. It includes the details that you need to give to the 4-H member who will be carrying your county's Centennial candle, and presenting it in the roll call of counties to be placed around the birthday cake at the end of the opening ceremony at the 4-H Centennial Hall on Sept. 10. Most importantly, it also has attached a form that needs to be submitted, either hard copy or by email, the name and county of your presenter. THIS INFORMATION IS DUE TO THE STATE 4-H OFFICE BY AUGUST 15. We need this in order to make up the name tag which all the candle bearers will wear that day. Thanks for your help. Will see you at the State Fair! Steve Fisher

Recruitment Issue Kansas 4-H Journal Celebrate the Kansas 4-H Centennial by recruiting 100 new 4-H members.

To help you, this year's recruitment issue of the Kansas 4-H Journal is written for new parents that are considering 4-H as the youth organization for their children to join. We want all families who receive the 4-H Journal to share it with a new family inviting them to join 4-H. 4-H Marketing Action team members wrote articles, focusing on information that would be helpful to parents as they consider 4-H.

Included in the recruitment issue is a "Belong" pull out section that can be taken out of the journal and shared with new families. This pull out section will be available on the state 4-H website beginning August 1 for you to copy in your local office and use to recruit new members. Mack
